The National Cancer Institute

estimates that more than

22,000 women will be diagnosed

with ovarian cancers in the

United States in 2007 and more

than 15,000 women will die of

the disease. A total of 75% of

new cases are diagnosed in

advanced stage, which is

different from other cancers,

particularly breast cancer.

Screening and detection

methods for this disease are

limited. There is a more than

90% recurrence rate with current

therapies, and median survival is

between 4 and 5 years. The

survival rate after 5 years for

advanced disease is 30%.

Stage I ovarian cancer is confined

to 1 or both ovaries. In stage II,

the cancer has spread to other

pelvic organs, such as the uterus

and fallopian tubes, but not to

other abdominal organs. Stage III

ovarian cancer involves cancer

metastasis to abdominal organs,

such as abdominal lymph nodes,

liver, and bowel. In stage IV, the

cancer has spread to other

distant sites, such as lung, brain,

and lymph nodes in the neck.

The survival rate for ovarian cancer

is strongly associated with

disease stage at diagnosis. The

Surveillance, Epidemiology, and

End Results (SEER) survey

reported relative survival rates by

stage at diagnosis from 1988 to

2003. The survival rate for

ovary-confined stage I disease is

very good, but dramatically

decreases for stage III and IV

disease. Among the different

histological types of ovarian

cancer, which include serous,

mucinous, endometrioid, and

clear cell, 70% of serous-type

tumors are diagnosed in

advanced stage whereas 50% of

mucinous and clear cell types

are diagnosed in stage I.
